Survivor Needs Assessment
In a commitment to uplift and empower domestic violence survivors, Friendship Home, in collaboration with the Asian Community Cultural Center, BraveBe, LPD Victim Assistance, and Voices of Hope, embarked on a transformative journey. Under the guidance of Dr. Toni Jensen, a comprehensive Survivor Needs Assessment was conducted from January 2023 to February 2024. This initiative, made possible through the invaluable support of Lancaster County Human Services, Woods Charitable Fund, and the Lincoln Community Foundation, aims to shed light on the pressing needs of survivors in our community.
This assessment was more than just research; it was a platform for survivors to share their stories, struggles, and hopes for a brighter future. It highlights the current strengths and critical gaps in our community that must be filled to ensure no one walks this path alone.
Key areas of focus have emerged from this vital work:
- Improving Housing Resources: The partnership is fiercely dedicated to enhancing a continuum of domestic violence-specific housing options that meet state and national standards for care. As highlighted by the University of Nebraska Lincoln Center on Children, Families, and the Law, our community needs an additional 35 trauma-informed domestic violence specific emergency shelter beds in Lincoln alone. Every bed represents a lifeline—a chance for someone to escape the shadows of violence and begin anew.
- Staff Resiliency: Understanding that the well-being of staff profoundly affects the care provided to survivors, we are committed to implementing strategies that nurture resilience and support among those on the front lines. Their strength and compassion are the foundation of healing for many.
- Sustainable Funding: Securing consistent, sustainable funding is vital for organizations supporting survivors. However, fluctuating federal funding is straining service capacity. Our partnership is actively exploring innovative funding solutions to ensure these essential services continue, so help is always available. Amid this challenge, a looming threat persists, partners have already faced a 40% reduction in Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) funding, affecting operations through 2024. Now, we are bracing for further reductions in 2025 and possibly beyond.
- Collaboration and Communication: Our collective strength lies in unity. The initiative underscores the importance of open communication and collaboration among community partners, creating a robust network ready to confront domestic violence with a united front.
- Elevating Survivor Experiences: This initiative’s heart is its commitment to reducing barriers in survivors’ experiences navigating to safety. As partners we are committed to providing supportive environments that prioritize survivors’ needs and validate their voices, empowering them to reclaim their lives.
As we strive to achieve these ambitious goals, your support as community members is not just appreciated; it is essential. Together, we have the power to transform lives, to provide safety, and to nurture hope for domestic violence survivors.
