International Women’s Day takes place on March 8, 2022. It is a day to honor and celebrate the contributions women made surrounding social, cultural, political and economic domains. It also calls for political and social activism for gender equity and gender parity. The theme for 2022 is Break the Bias. It attempts to highlight the importance of challenging biases and misconceptions in the interest of creating a more inclusive and gender equal world.
International Women’s Day Timeline
1908– In New York around 15,000 women marched through the streets demanding better pay, shorter hours, and voting rights.
1910– During the 2nd International Conference of Working Women, a woman named Clara Zetkin brought up the idea of International Women’s Day. Every year each country would celebrate it on the same day. The women at the conference approved this proposal.
1911– International Women’s Day was honored for the first time in Germany, Austria, Denmark, and Switzerland on March 19th.
1913-14– International Women’s Day was agreed to be marked annually on March 8th.
1975– In 1975, International Women’s Day was celebrated for the first time by the United Nations.
1996- The United Nations announced their first theme for International Women’s Day. Since then, ever year has had a theme.
